When you buy a new-to-you home, it’s a good idea to replace the air filter in your HVAC unit immediately. But if the HVAC unit isn’t the same as in your last place, it may be a little difficult locating where it is.

All HVAC units have air filters. The air filter is usually located in the return air duct or blower compartment, just before the air reaches the air handler. This is what allows the filter to clean the air coming into your house before it enters your HVAC unit and blows into the rest of your home.Where Is The Air Filter In My HVAC Unit?

The air filter in your HVAC unit may be located in one of these places:

Horizontal HVAC units have a return duct attached to the side of the air handler. The filter can be found on the side of the unit in a slot near the return air intake.

Vertical air handlers take in air in different ways. When the return air duct enters on top of the air handler, the filter is often in a slot above the HVAC unit. When the return air duct enters on the bottom of the air handler, the filter is often in a slot below the HVAC unit.

If your HVAC system operates by having a return in each room, you may find air filters behind each of the return grills.

If you still have difficulty finding it, a simple Google search with the make of your HVAC unit may lead you to the right location.
